I plan to vote on Election Day. I’ve heard some people say they’re still not sure how they’re going to vote. Some folks aren’t certain if they’re going to vote at all. But I have friends who have already voted.
My vote is a stewardship. I have this one vote to cast, to use in the way I think best. Not all nations allow their citizens to vote…but mine does.
I alone am responsible for how I vote. So, I need to educate myself on the issues and the candidates. What is their past record? Are their words and actions consistent with a biblical world-view? In today’s culture, that is not an easy task. Because of media bias, it’s hard to know what is factually accurate vs. what is “spin.”
“If you don’t read the newspaper, you’re uninformed. If you do read it, you’re misinformed.”
So said Denzel Washington four years ago. He said that journalism had become more about “being first” rather than being truthful. “So, what a responsibility you all have. To tell the truth, not just to be first.” He told a group of reporters, “Anything you practice, you’ll get good at.”
(here’s a link to a minute-long clip of the video)
And that’s true—you do get better at what you practice. So, I’m going to practice my civic duty, my privilege and responsibility. To vote my conscience in this election. I hope you do, too!
