During this season of Covid-19/pandemic/flatten-the-curve/slow-the-spread and don’t-forget-to-wash-your-hands semi-quarantine — our lives have been forcibly slowed down. Our activities reduced. To some extent at least, our schedules have been cleared. And after nearly 8 weeks there are just some things that I miss…
— going out to dinner with my husband.
— seeing my church family and singing together with them on Sunday mornings.
— being free to schedule coffee dates with friends.
— I really miss being able to hug my grandbabies!
But in the midst of all this “missing” — I have come to realize that there are some things missing that I don’t miss…
— getting stuck in traffic, especially on the way home from work.
— paying to gas up my car every week.
— doing the whole make-up routine every day so I don’t scare people.
— making sure my “good” clothes are clean, fairly wrinkle-free, and ready to wear so that I look “presentable.”
— I don’t miss feeling like I’ll never get to the end of my to-do list.
When I look at what I miss, I see that I miss people–connection with the folks I care about. That’s an important part of life. Looking at what I don’t miss, I see busy-ness and self-imposed “rules” — who says I have to wear make-up every day? (I do!)
Maybe a good thing that could come out of all of this is a re-prioritizing of what matters, what’s genuinely worth time and effort. What’s going to be a lasting investment?
