Abortion

When my kids were young, their elementary school made a big deal out of the 100th day of school. Classes kept track of the number of days in anticipation of the 100th day. It was considered a milestone that represented progress, growth, and achievement. Kids were encouraged to be proud of their academic efforts, and to bring 100 of something to school that day. Items like buttons, marbles, beans, peanut m & m’s (okay—I made that one up!). It was also a good time for reflection—to look back at how much had been accomplished, and to consider what goals were still on the horizon.

What might the future bring…?

It’s been 100 days since the Supreme Court handed down its decision in the Dobbs case, overturning Roe v. Wade. I didn’t bring a jar of buttons or beans to count, and I promise I’m not munching on peanut m & m’s. But it is a good time to reflect on what has been accomplished, and what is yet to be done…

Abortion is still legal in the United States. Some states have implemented stronger protections for the unborn. Other states have introduced legislation to make abortion more easily accessible, some even going so far as to promote “abortion tourism” in their state.

Iowa’s current laws protect the unborn after 20 weeks, except in the case of a medical emergency.

–In June, the Iowa Supreme Court overturned a previous decision from 2018, and clarified that there is not a fundamental right to abortion in the Iowa constitution.

–Iowa’s 24-hour waiting period passed by the legislature in 2020 can go into effect.

–Governor Reynolds has asked the courts to lift the injunction against Iowa’s 2018 “heartbeat law” and allow it to go into effect. Since that injunction relied on state and federal court rulings that have been overturned, then the law which was already passed by the legislature should go into effect. This is being litigated now.

When people ask what Alpha will do now that Roe has been overturned, I tell them we’ll keep on doing what we’re doing now:

–We will love our Maker and love our neighbor.

–We will speak LIFE. We will tell women the truth—the truth about God’s love for them and their unborn children.

–We will encourage the choice for life and come alongside and practically help support that choice.

Until the day comes when abortion becomes unthinkable.
