Comfort
When you’re down and discouraged, what brings you comfort? Maybe you grab a carton of ice cream and just start digging in with a spoon. Is there a favorite movie or TV show you like to watch, because of the familiar storyline or characters? Do you wrap yourself up in a blanket and take a nap? Maybe all of the above…?
I was reading in 2 Corinthians 7 recently, and I underlined part of verse 6 — “God who comforts the downcast.” The word comfort here literally means “to call near.” What could be more comforting to a scared or sad child than the close presence of her loving heavenly Father? God is described in the Psalms as being a “very present help” in time of trouble–exceedingly helpful, present, ready to aid. When we are hurting, lonely, confused–God calls us near. How amazingly awesome is that?
Those are encouraging words to rest in!
