I Think I’m Pregnant, What Are My Next Steps?

Thinking you might be pregnant? You might have missed your period. Maybe you feel nauseous. Whatever the reason, it’s okay to take a moment and breathe. Then, when you’re ready, here’s what to do next.

First Step: Pregnancy Test

According to the Cleveland Clinic, it’s best to wait until after you miss your period to take a test. Testing too early may give you a negative result even if you’re pregnant. If your test is negative but you still think you might be pregnant, you can test again in a few days. You can find a pregnancy test at almost any store, but for a free one, you can visit Alpha Women’s Center in Ankeny and Des Moines.

Second Step: An Early Pregnancy Ultrasound

An early pregnancy, limited OB ultrasound is the next step after a positive pregnancy test, which is something Alpha Women’s Center also offers for free. This will confirm the pregnancy, let you see the heartbeat, tell you how far along you are, and check where the pregnancy is located. Your options and timeline depend on answers you get from this appointment.

To request a free pregnancy test or a free, limited OB ultrasound, call 515-965-7885 (Ankeny), 515-285-5700 (Des Moines) or visit our website with the links above.

Third Step: Talk With Someone

Talking with someone you trust can help you sort through your own feelings about the pregnancy. This could be a family member, close friend, or even a team member at Alpha Women’s Center.

We understand that the need for a pregnancy test can bring up a lot of feelings. Our team at Alpha Women’s Center is here to listen. If you want to learn more about your options, we can answer questions and share information that you deserve to have before deciding what to do.

Fourth Step: Take Your Time

You don’t have to decide today. Before you make an y decision, it’s important to take time to think through everything you’ve learned over the last few steps.

In Summary: What Should You Do Right Now?

  1. Request an appointment for a free pregnancy test.
  2. If the test is positive, schedule a free, limited OB ultrasound at Alpha Women’s Center.
  3. Talk with someone you trust.
  4. Take your time. You don’t have to decide anything today.
