When to take a test

Pregnancy tests measure hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), a hormone your body only produces during pregnancy, and that hormone needs time to build up in your urine to a detectable level. Testing too early is the most common reason for an inaccurate result, so we recommend waiting until after you have missed a period.

Taken at the right time, a test is highly accurate. If you are not sure where you are in your cycle, our team can help you work that out before you test.

What your visit looks like

Your appointment is unhurried and private. You will meet with a woman from our team whose only goal is to understand how we can help.

At our Ankeny location, your hCG urine test is administered by a trained, licensed nurse as part of our medical services, and your result comes back within about three minutes.

At our Des Moines location, the hCG urine test is self-administered, an initial peace-of-mind step while we build out nurse staffing there. If your result is positive, we will refer you to our Ankeny center for a nurse-administered confirmation test ahead of a free, early pregnancy limited OB ultrasound.

Most first visits last around 30 minutes. Whatever the result, you will not be rushed out the door, and you will leave with accurate information rather than guesses.

If your test is positive

A positive test is the beginning of a conversation, not the end of one. We can talk through what you are feeling, answer your questions, and explain what comes next at whatever pace you need.

You may also be eligible for a free, early pregnancy limited OB ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy and find out how far along you are. There is no pressure and no agenda in that conversation.
