How Do I Tell My Family I’m Pregnant?

Maybe you just found out you’re pregnant. Maybe you think you might be. Either way, you might be wondering, “How am I going to tell my family?”

Maybe you’re excited. Maybe you’re worried. Whatever you’re feeling, you don’t have to figure this out all on your own.

Start with a Pregnancy Test

If you haven’t taken a pregnancy test yet, that’s a good place to start. To find a free pregnancy test, you can request an appointment with Alpha Women’s Center. When you take a test at Alpha Women’s Center, it also gives you a chance to talk with someone about any worries and questions you might have.

Our team is here to listen, answer your questions, and help you as you think through what comes next. You don’t have to have everything figured out before coming in.

Think About What You’re Worried About

Have you seen how your family reacted to someone else’s pregnancy? Maybe you’re worried because of your family’s beliefs or expectations.

One woman who grew up in a religious household shared online that she was scared to tell her parents. Her father was upset at first, but after talking with her and asking how she was doing, he came to accept the pregnancy.

You can choose when and how you tell them. After that, give them time to process the news.

Pick a Time and Place

If you feel safe, tell your family in person. This gives you a chance to talk and see how they react. However, if you don’t feel safe, you can call, text, or ask someone you trust to be with you. If you are ever in danger, call 911. You can also reach the National Domestic Violence Hotline anytime at 1-800-799-7233.

If you decide to tell them in person, try to pick a time when everyone has a chance to sit down and talk. This could be when everyone is relaxing in the living room, eating dinner, or a time that your family uses to hang out and talk.

What Do I Say?

You don’t need to give a long speech. You can keep it simple. You could say something like:

“I have something important to tell you. I just found out I’m pregnant.”

or

“I know this might be a lot to take in, but I wanted you to hear this from me. I’m pregnant.”

You don’t have to have everything figured out before telling them.

Their Reaction May Surprise You

You may have an idea of how your family will react, but they can always surprise you. Your family may even have different reactions after they’ve had time to process the news.

Deja Williams shared her story on Young United Parents (YUP!). She said, “Everyone in my life had a different reaction to finding out I was pregnant. Some were happy. Some were scared . . . but now that my daughter is here . . . she is loved immensely by so many people in our lives.”

What About My Partner?

You may also be wondering how to tell your partner. If you feel safe, you can tell them in person and give them time to process the news. If you’re worried about how your partner may react, you can choose another way to tell them or bring someone you trust with you. Think about what would make you feel safe.
