I’m Pregnant and Single. What Do I Do?

Finding out you’re pregnant while single can feel overwhelming. You might be wondering if you can do this on your own. Maybe having a baby wasn’t part of your plans.

So. What do you do?

Start with an Early Pregnancy Ultrasound

If you had a positive pregnancy test, one important next step is a free early pregnancy limited OB ultrasound. This confirms the pregnancy, lets you see the heartbeat, tells you how far along you are, and checks to see where the pregnancy is located. Your options and timeline depend on answers that you get from this appointment.

Alpha Women’s Center offers a free limited OB ultrasound. To request an appointment, you can call 515-965-7885 (Ankeny), 515-285-5700 (Des Moines) or visit our website.

Who Can Help Me?

If you don’t have a partner, the idea of pregnancy and raising a child can feel lonely and difficult. And that is a very understandable feeling.

That’s why community and finding resources are important.

One woman shared what a normal week looks like for her as a single mom who is expecting a third child. In her blog, she says, “I would not be the mother I am today without the help and care from my little village which includes my family, my twin mom support group . . . close friends, and daycare staff.”

Find People You Can Lean On

Everyone needs people they can rely on. Find someone who will listen to you and offer support, even if it ends up being just one person.

Your family and friends can be a great support system. If you are wondering how to break the news to them, you can read our recent blog, “How Do I Tell My Family That I’m Pregnant?”

Consider a Local Church

One woman shared that the father of her twins left when she was four months pregnant. Afraid of being judged, she tried to hide her growing belly with oversized outfits and eventually started attending a different campus of her church. Later in her pregnancy, she ran into a woman from church she hadn’t seen in a while. That woman reminded her that God loved her and her babies, and encouraged her to come back to her home campus. When she returned, she went to her pastor to share how one of his sermons had helped her choose life. He was grateful and reassured her that she was welcome. She went on to join a Bible study and her church’s single-mom ministry, which surrounded her with the community she needed.

A local church can be a good place to find a loving and supportive community. They can even connect you to more local resources.
